The ancient Albanian Diocese of Sapa has its headquarter in Vau Dejës. Referring to the data given by the Annuario Ponteficio, the establishment of the Diocese of Sapa is the year 1062. The ancient town of Sapa has been completely disappeared, there are only the ruins of the Cathedral Church dedicated to St. Michael. This is because of the wars and invasions our people and our country have suffered. At the beginning it was destroyed by the Tartars in the year 1240, then later by the Ottomans and also by natural disasters and earthquakes. But, the Episcopal seat of Sapa has managed to survive nevertheless all the difficulties.
