On February 11, the Catholic Church throughout the world celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.
Our Lady of Lourdes is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary invoked by Roman Catholics in honor of the Marian apparitions which have taken place around Lourdes, France.
On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On 11 February 1858, a lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, a 14-year-old girl, who came from a poor family. The lady appeared to her in the cave of Massabielle, a mile from the town, while gathering firewood with her sister and a friend. The appearances continued afterwards. During the appearance of March 25, the lady was identified with the words “the immaculate conception”.
Through that humble girl Mary revitalized and continues to revitalize the faith of millions of people. Many people from all countries of France and around the world began to flock to Lourdes. The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became worldwide known in 1907 and it is also known as the World Day of the Sick.
Except the pilgrimage in Lourdes, which takes place throughout the year, but especially on the day of the sick, on February 11, many faithful gather in the church in their countries to participate in the Holy Mass which is celebrated on the occasion of this feast, especially for the sick.
Malteser Albania feels closely linked with this feast, as it is constantly involved in various activities even with the sick.
In the Cathedral Mother Teresa in Laç-Vau Dejës, Malteser participated in the Holy Mass for the sick, which was celebrated at 10.30 by Msgr. Lucian Avgustini, Bishop of the Diocese of Sapa and President of Malteser Albania in co-celebration with the priests of this diocese in the presence of faithful and the sick, who were present despite the cold and bad weather in their areas.
While in Shkodra,, the Mass for the Sick was organized at the Cathedral of St. Stephen at 15.00 and it was celebrated by the Archbishop Angelo Massafra in co-celebration with the parish priest and other priests.
The Malteser volunteers collaborated with the Sisters of Missionaries of Charity Mother Teresa to transport the sick children from the house of the Sisters to the Cathedral and back.
At the end of the Mass in Sapa and Shkodra, the celebrants gave thanks to all those who helped in organizing the Mass, to Malteser Albania, which gives a special contribution to help the sick.
