Summer has come and Malteser Albania has organized for the 12th year the Summer School-Camp in Velipoja beach. As usually, the Summer Camp was organized for one month (28 June – 27 July), to welcome Roma and Egyptian children, children from rural areas, in order to give them the opportunity to enjoy summer holidays that their families can’t afford and try to integrate them into the social life, since they come from poor and isolated backgrounds.
The participants were divided into three shifts, with 70 children and 10 volunteers for shift. There were Roma and Egyptian children, children coming from the outskirts of Shkodra, from the remote areas of Malësi e Madhe, Tropoja, and Puka. Three Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Heart of Jesus from Tropoja (one for each shift) have been assisting the children and helping the volunteers with different activities.
Before the Camp start, the Malteser volunteers prepared the territory and set up the tents during June 28-30. A great help was the Italian Organization of the Order of Malta for supporting the camp financially and its representative Mr. Gregorio Barberi, who personally came to help and lead the Malteser Albania volunteers in setting up the camp.
The volunteers guided by the staff have been contributing to the success of the camp. They have organized and run all the planned activities; they took care of the children, helping in holding the daily activities, in cooking, cleaning and maintaining the logistics. They have been trying to provide an appropriate environment where children would feel comfortable, enjoy the holidays, have fun, learn new interesting things, make new friends, be open to communicate their thoughts and fully participate in the activities.
At the end of each shift, the children enjoyed going to the playground and having fun, and participating in the show “Malteser got talents”, where each of them had the chance to offer a performance from their talents. A precious moment of the show was a Roma little girl who played the violin wonderfully.
Regarding the camp facilities, this year some new installations of drinking water pipes were a great relief for the camp and the stock room and the camp kitchen were clad with clapboards.
On the last evening, on July 26, a Mass was celebrated by Father Aurel Gjerkaj. A festive atmosphere was created afterwards, where the camp “inhabitants” and the guests, the President of Malteser Albania, H.E. Lucjan Avgustini, Bishop of Sapa, the director of the Development Center, the representative of “Projekti Shpresa”, and Malteser staff enjoyed the music, dances, talks and watched a slideshow of the photos taken during the camp period. Before leaving the camp, the Malteser volunteers received certificates as a gratitude for their wonderful work done in the Summer School-Camp, Velipoja 2013.
For the success of the Children Summer Camp, Malteser Albania is very grateful and offers thanks for their support to: Malteser Hilfdienst, the parish group of Neuss/Germany “Hilfe für Albanien” St. Cyriakus-Neuss-Grimlinghausen, the Italian Organization of the Order of Malta and its volunteer Mr. Gregorio Barberi, for helping in setting up the camp, the Franciscan Sisters of Tropoja, and Malteser Albania volunteers who helped in the realization and run of the Camp.
Parts of the Camp life were transmitted by the local TV.
