According to the World Health Organization, 900 million people worldwide live without access to clean water, and 2.6 billion live without basic sanitation. Many diseases are caused by poor hygienic conditions and scarce or polluted water.
Considering these difficulties, The World Toilet Day, November 19, has been acknowledged official world day by the United Nations. This day aims to set a sign for better sanitation worldwide and to support co-operation between all relevant actors in the field of sanitation.
As a response to these needs, in June 20th 2011, German non-governmental Organizations founded the WASH Network (“WA-S-H” water, sanitation and hygiene).
Following the activities held during this day, Malteser Albania came to meet the needs of the Roma Community who lives in tents and cabins by the River Drin in Shkodra, whom Malteser has been assisting even during the stressful periods of flooding in winter.
These Roma people face very difficult conditions in their daily lives. There are about 250 people who live in extreme poverty, lacking even minimal sanitation conditions.
Malteser has made possible the setting of three toilets, which are equipped with a toilet and sink, and working of a groove with taps close to their quarter, being thus, another group of toilets set by Malteser.
All this has been made possible by the financial support of Father Schwarz, who is the oldest collaborator with Malteser Albania, its founder, its spiritual leader until 2006, and president in 2008, “Honorary Citizen” of Shkodra Municipality.
