Each year, since 1991, on November 14, the World Health Organization and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), organizes the World Diabetes Day. This day was designated as World Diabetes Day in honor of the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, two Canadian scientists first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1922.
All the medical communities and associations of diabetes join to prevent diabetes, by sensitizing people to perform regular checks of glycemia and blood pressure and consider a few tips, in accordance with the theme of this day for the years 2009-2013 “Diabetes – Education and Prevention “.
According to the World Health Organization, 8.3 % of the world population is affected by diabetes. In Albania, 2.7 % of the adult population (about 62 thousand known), although it is considered that the number is higher.
